We are extremely pleased to welcome back Sergei Varlamov as the Head Coach of The Toronto Flyers for the 2024/2025 Season!
Sergei Varlamov was born on July 21, 1978, in Kyiv, Ukraine. His passion for hockey ignited at a young age, inspired by his older brother’s involvement in the sport. Beginning at the age of 6 in a Soviet hockey school, Sergei quickly honed his skating skills, eventually joining Sokil Kyiv, a prestigious hockey institution known for producing top-tier Ukrainian NHL players.
At just 16 years old, Sergei embarked on a journey to Canada to pursue his hockey dreams. His debut came in 1995 with the Swift Current Broncos in the WHL, where he showcased his talent and emerged as a standout player during the 1997/98 season. This remarkable performance earned him multiple awards, including recognition as the league’s best scorer and sniper, as well as a spot on the First All-Star Team.
Sergei’s prowess on the ice caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to his entry into the league with the Calgary Flames for the 1997/98 season. He later went on to play for the St. Louis Blues and proudly represented Ukraine at the Olympic Games.
Following the 2004 NHL lockout, Sergei Varlamov continued his hockey journey in Russia’s Super League and the KHL until 2009. He then returned to Ukraine, playing for Sokil Kyiv before joining Dinamo Minsk in the KHL. Notably, Sergei scored the inaugural goal at the new Minsk Arena, marking a historic moment in the team’s history.
His dedication to the sport extended beyond playing as he transitioned into leadership roles within Ukrainian hockey leagues. As a CEO, Sergei focused on developing professional hockey in Ukraine, aiming to elevate the sport’s status and accessibility. Unfortunately, these efforts were disrupted by the outbreak of war in 2022, which brought a temporary halt to hockey activities in the region.
Throughout his career, Sergei Varlamov left a lasting impact on Ukrainian hockey, showcasing exceptional skill, leadership, and a relentless passion for the game.
